Job Opportunity: Liaison Librarian/Informationist at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)

The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Libraries seeks an energetic, collaborative, and self-motivated individual to fill the position of Liaison Librarian/Informationist 

The Liaison Librarian/Informationist will provide research and knowledge management services to students and teaching, clinical, and research faculty from the College of Pharmacy. This position reports to the Associate Director of Libraries and will work in a flexible, team-oriented, highly collaborative environment. A broad scope of work and activities are within this position, including expert search services, teaching and education, research consultations, and community engagement to MUSC students, faculty, and staff in the health sciences. An ALA-accredited Master's degree in Library Science is required. New Librarians are encouraged to apply.

SC/MLA Nominations for Elected Office

Please consider running for one of the SC/MLA positions (listed below)! If you are interested or know of a good candidate for any of the listed positions, please use the Southern Chapter Nominations Form.

Please note that all nominations will be reviewed by the Nominating Committee for eligibility and all nominees contacted for willingness to serve.  All Southern Chapter members are eligible to serve in any office, but cannot serve in more than one office at a time. Elected officers, except Representative to the Chapter Council and Alternate, shall take office at the close of the SC/MLA Annual Meeting following their election and serve, until the close of the SC/MLA Annual Meeting at the end of their terms of office. Program Chair – Elect
The term of office of the Chair shall be, in succession, one year as Program Chair-Elect, the second year as Chair-Elect/Program Chair, the third year as Chair, and the fourth year as Immediate Past Chair. No one may serve more than one successive term.  The duties of the Program Chair-Elect shall be to serve as a Program Chair whenever the Chair-Elect/Program Chair is not able to do so, to serve as a member of the annual meeting Program Committee. Secretary 
The term of office of the Secretary shall be three years, with two years as the Secretary and on year training the incoming Secretary. An individual may not serve more than one successive three-year term as Secretary.  The duties of the Secretary shall be to be responsible for incoming and outgoing correspondence, to prepare minutes of all Chapter business meetings and meetings of the Executive Board, and manage Chapter elections.

Treasurer
The term of office of the Treasurer shall be three years, with two years as the Treasurer and on year training the incoming Treasurer. An individual may not serve more than one successive three-year term as Treasurer.  The duties of the Treasurer shall be to exercise to be responsible for the collection, receipt, custody and proper disbursement of all monies due to or owed by the organization, and to be responsible for the maintenance of Chapter financial records and for the preparation of the IRS tax report. The Treasurer shall pay all bills and meet all financial obligations of the Chapter, provided that such bills and obligations have been incurred with the consent of the Chair and/or the Executive Board

MLA Nominating Committee Candidate
Serves one year as a possible candidate to the MLA Nominating Committee.  If elected by the MLA membership, will serve one year on the MLA Nominating Committee.  Must be an MLA member, cannot already be a possible candidate for the MLA Nominating Committee on another ballot or for an MLA elected office.

Chapter Council Representative Alternate
The term of office of the Alternate Representative to the Chapter Council shall be three years, except that if the Representative's term be made shorter by action of the Council or the Bylaws of the Medical Library Association, the term will coincide with that action.   The duties of the Alternate Representative to the Chapter Council shall be to attend the meetings of the Chapter Council, to serve as representative whenever the Representative is unable to do so, to assume the office of Representative and serve out the unexpired term should the Representative become unable to complete the term of office or should the Representative be elected Chair of the Chapter Council.

Clarivate Analytics/MLA Doctoral Fellowship

Clarivate Analytics sponsors a fellowship to foster and encourage superior students to conduct doctoral work in an area of health sciences librarianship or information sciences and to provide support to individuals who have been admitted to candidacy. The award supports research or travel applicable to the candidate's study within a twelve-month period. The award may not be used for tuition. The application form and more information about the fellowship, including more detail about application components, can be accessed under Grants, Scholarships, and Fellowships.

Applications are due by December 1, 2019 by 11:59 pm (CDT) and must include the following components:

  • Completed application, including signed statement of terms and conditions.
  • Transcripts of graduate work submitted directly from the institution to MLA or proof of enrollment in the graduate program and a list of courses completed.
  • Name and contact information of doctoral advisor.
  • Updated MLA profile. 
  • Two letters of reference, submitted by the reference directly to MLA (awards@mail.mlahq.org), one from applicant's advisor. References must include the following information:
    • Applicant's name, position/status, institution, and project summary.
    • Reference name, position, institution, and location.
    • How long and in what capacity the reference has known the applicant?
    • Would reference like their comments held in confidence?
    • An assessment of:
      • the professional merits of the applicant’s proposal, especially its significance and feasibility;
      • the depth of applicant’s knowledge in the professional area of the proposal;
      • the applicant’s research competence; and
      • the applicant’s personal traits, including the ability to work with colleague.

Job Opportunity: Clinical Information Librarian, Greenblatt Library, Augusta University

The Robert B. Greenblatt, M.D. Library of Augusta University invites applications for the position of Clinical Information Librarian. Reporting to the Assistant Director for Research & Education Services, the primary focus of this non-tenure track faculty position is to support Augusta University’s clinical and educational mission through planning, development, delivery and evaluation of quality health information and instruction.

Required:

  • Master’s degree in library science from an ALA accredited institution
  • Experience in a health sciences library or other health sciences environment
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with current resources, vocabularies and research techniques in the biomedical sciences, specifically Evidence-Based Medicine tenets and teaching methodologies
  • Collaborative planning and problem solving abilities; ability to implement and manage programs and projects
  • Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong customer service skills and abilities, especially an outgoing, entrepreneurial, client-centered focus
  • Evidence of ability to meet university standards in librarianship, teaching, research and publication, and service commensurate with faculty status

2019 SC/MLA Annual Meeting: Paper & Poster Abstracts - deadline extension (June 19)


The SC/MLA Programming Committee invites you to submit proposals for contributed papers and posters for the 2019 SC/MLA 69th Annual Meeting in Savannah, GA on October 10-13.

The meeting theme is "Squaring the Circle: Libraries Shaping the Future"

Please submit a blinded abstract through this form following the structured abstract format by MLA's Research Section. There is a 300-word maximum. The blinded abstract, which will be used in a blind review process, must not include any specific information that would identify authors or institutions. The deadline for paper and poster abstract submissions has been extended to Wednesday, June 19 (11:59pm). 

Please consider the following when submitting abstract proposals:
  • "Squaring the Circle" is an impossible mathematical task and a metaphor for trying to accomplish the impossible. Please share experiences in which you have attempted the impossible, and either failed or succeeded.
  • Shaping the Future: Please describe how you are shaping the future of libraries and the health sciences in the areas of technology, resources, services, or library spaces.

How to successfully navigate your 1st MLA


You cannot see and do it all and you don’t need to.

To learn the most about MLA attend the business meeting, open forum, and presidential address.

Before MLA:
  • Pack an ample supply of business cards
  • Sign up for a mentor/colleague connection
  • Sign up and go to the first timer’s breakfast
  • check the weather to help with wardrobe planning and remember meeting spaces are usually chilly bring layers
  • Participants seem to be dressing more casually in recent years when they are not presenting 
  • bring small bills for tips and to for your share of any group meals

Practice self-care:
  • Pace yourself so you don’t wear yourself out
  • Hydrate
  • Have a healthy snack on you
  • Leave yourself plenty of downtime and opportunities for casual conversation

Social Connections:
  • Introduce yourself to at least one person at every event you go to
  • Attend at least one poster session for great ideas and networking
  • Library School Reunion is a smaller get together and very casual

  • Use the program planner & the App
  • Follow #mlanet19 on Twitter
  • What to tip? (see more at Forbes.com)

Tips for Service:
  • For bellhops and airport baggage handlers, $2 per bag; give more for great service or very heavy bags.
  • $2–$5 to doormen for hailing cabs (extra in bad weather) or helping with bags.
  • $3–$5 per night for housekeeping staff (extra for upscale hotels or if you left your room particularly messy)—and tip daily, not at the end of your stay, since employees change from one day to the next.
  • 15%–20% for taxi, Uber, or Lyft drivers; more if drivers help you with luggage and are great drivers!
